The mechanisms of hypnotic age regression: an experimental study

Abstract

In a somnambulistic state of hypnosis, the age of 6 was suggested to 10 students. Rorschach records, handwriting, and drawing samples were taken during both waking and hypnotic stages. “Neither the Rorschach technique nor the drawings and handwriting samples gave evidence of true or complete regression.” The results indicate that subjects play, to the best of their ability, the role of the child at the suggested age, while their personalities remain relatively adult. “The terms ‘age regression’ or ‘ablation of the personality’ appear to be inappropriate.” Comparative drawings have been reproduced. 23 references.
