New sources of autologous tissue that can functionally replace the corneal epithelium; have recently been considered as an alternative to allogenous limbal transplants for limbal stem cells deficiency (LSCD). Nevertheless, regardless of the cell expansion technique (in vivo or ex vivo), the assessment of the limbal condition is crucial. It goes from the initial staging at the acute phase of a severe chemical burn; using the right classification, to the evaluation of the remaining ocular surface inflammation, during the chronic phase. We will review all the aspects of the evaluation of the limbal condition, that help the clinician, build his therapeutic strategy.
