Abstract

Objectives:

To address and describe the relationship between substance abuse and psychiatric illnesses.

Introduction:

There is nowadays an extensive medical literature on the relationship between substance abuse and psychiatric illnesses and conditions. In this article, this relationship is extensively addressed, discussed, and documented.

Materials and Methods:

An extensive review of the literature was conducted to demonstrate and clearly describe the relationship between substance abuse disorders and conditions and psychiatric illnesses.

Results:

The literature review conducted extensively demonstrate the ongoing relationship between psychiatric illnesses and the use and abuse of illicit drugs, as well as certain medications that can lead to addiction.

Conclusions:

In this article, it was clearly established and demonstrated that there is an extensive relationship between substance abuse and a large number of mental illnesses and conditions. This dual relationship was also demonstrated to be on a worldwide basis.
