Abstract

Objective:

To audit the quality and safety of alcohol detoxification in a consultation-liaison setting.

Materials and Methods:

Medical records of patients with alcohol use disorder referred to a consultation-liaison unit were inspected retrospectively.

Results:

A total of 41 admissions were audited. The referring teams tended to focus on the medical aspects of alcohol use, whereas the consultation-liaison teams focused on the psychiatric aspects. Input from consultation-liaison teams helped to improve the referring teams’ management.

Conclusions:

There is a need to enhance educational efforts to improve all clinicians' understanding of alcohol use disorders. The various stakeholders involved should collaborate closely to improve the quality of care rendered to these patients.
