Abstract

A solid, well documented account of the life and times of the first great physician of this country. The author deserves the gratitude of all who have been interested in the many-sided life of this medical man who was not only a medical educator, a professor of chemistry, a founder of temperance and antislavery societies, the first American psychiatrist, but also a great patriot and a courageous moulder of public opinion in the Revolutionary period. A man of strong opinions, not unmixed with obstinacy, he made many enemies and had a historic falling out with Washington himself.
