To the editor: An extensive review of drug therapy in renal failure indicated little data was available regarding the dialyzability of theophylline (1). We recently had the opportunity to study this problem in a patient who suffered an acute asthmatic episode while in acute renal failure.

A 60-year-old white woman developed acute oliguric renal failure after abdominal aortic aneurysmectomy and Dacron® graft insertion. Initially, she was treated conservatively. On the 4th postoperative day, she required acute hemodialysis for treatment of uremia and severe metabolic alkalosis secondary to nasogastric suction.
