To the editor: Since completing our paper on the early history of progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) (1), we have learned of a case of a patient with “scleroderma” that preceded the report by the Bordeaux physician Élie Gintrac (1791–1877), to whom we had given credit for the origin of this term (2). The article to which we refer was written by Giovambattista Fantonetti (1791–1861), is entitled “Skleroderma Generale,” and was published in 1836 in Effemeridi delle Scienze Mediche, a journal he had founded in Milan (3).
