In 1976 a symposium on health and disease among tribal populations was held to discuss three topics: [1] How can so-called primitive peoples be protected from the on-slaught of civilization; [2] Does studying of such peoples help to understand the ills of their “civilized” counterparts; and [3] Can (or should) anything be done to help assimilate such groups into modern society?
