Stones in the urinary tract were for many years the province of the urologic surgeon who, by and large, was more concerned with safe and effective removal of the stone than with understanding why it occurred. The importance of disordered calcium metabolism in pathogenesis was firmly established by Albright, but most internists have regarded stones as clues to interesting diseases rather than a subject of study in their own right.
