Recurrent Postpartum Transient Hyperthyroidism

Abstract

To the editor: Two self-limited disorders of thyroid function have recently received considerable attention: hyperthyroidism, associated with a reduced radioactive iodine uptake, and hypothyroidism in the postpartum period. Both may be self-limited and associated with complete recovery (1, 2). Transient hyperthyroidism with low radioactive iodine uptake, also called “painless thyroiditis” (1), followed by hypothyroidism may also occur in the postpartum period (3).

I report the case of a patient previously reported to have “painless thyroiditis” after a pregnancy, who developed a second episode of transient hyperthyroidism after a subsequent pregnancy.
