Abstract

The strengths and weaknesses of this book about the lives of pioneer women physicians are paradoxically linked: On the one hand, the volume lacks thematic organization and editorial comment—91 short autobiographies are presented one after another like beads strung on a chain without attention to design. Although the stories of lives are intrinsically interesting, it is difficult to maintain a steady interest in the book. This lack of design (one could imagine, for example, grouping the lives by nationality, medical specialty, or motivation for entering medicine) is also, from one perspective, the book's strength.
