Abstract

There have been four important medical advances that in a short time have combined to focus attention on the pituitary gland and disorders affecting it. These include a better appreciation of the neuroendocrine mechanisms that regulate pituitary hormone secretion, the recognition that hyperprolactinemia is implicated in approximately 25% of cases of secondary amenorrhea, improved radiologic techniques that allow the detection of pituitary microadenomas that previously went unrecognized, and restoration of normal endocrine function in a high percentage of patients after complete removal of these tumors using the transsphenoidal route. The early identification of these tumors is therefore important.
