To the editor: Dr. Alan Bisno's editorial in the March 1979 issue (1) contains a gross inaccuracy that I feel must be corrected. He states that my colleagues and I “have advocated treatment of all patients with sore throats with antibiotics as the most cost-effective way to prevent acute rheumatic fever.” In our article on the cost-effectiveness of pharyngitis management (2) we specifically avoided making such a recommendation and, instead, suggested that clinical attributes (that is, history and physical findings) could be used to choose cost-effective treatment plans for individual patients.

Our approach to streptococcal pharyngitis management is quite similar
