Abstract

To the editor: The reported occurrence of splenic abscess in autopsy series is less than 1% and rarely is an antemortem diagnosis made (1). The subject has been recently reviewed (2), and there appears to be universal agreement that the proper management of these patients is primarily surgical. There are no reported cases of patients with well-documented abscesses successfully treated with antibiotics alone. We wish to report the successful treatment of a splenic abscess in a patient in whom surgery was not done because of his poor medical status.

A 58-year-old man was admitted to hospital with a 1-week history
