Abstract

Despite an egalitarian consumer's world demanding that health care come with a warranty, physicians succeed or fail according to their judgments based on their knowledge of their own strengths and weaknesses. To one physician, a severely burned patient is a challenge, but to another a fear. To one physician, a psychotic patient is the object of focused curiosity, to another, revulsion. Such feelings are neither right nor wrong, but they must be taken into account in treating each patient who comes for help.
