A new series of annual reviews of lung diseases and respiratory science is being offered under the editorship of Daniel H. Simmons. Because comparable periodic summaries are already established in this field, one is entitled to ask of this publication: To whom are the articles addressed? Do they succeed? As might be expected, the answer, with respect to Volume 1, is mixed and reflects the quality of the individual chapters.
There are several truly excellent syntheses. Harold Israel has written a modern study of sarcoidosis that might be read with profit by third-year medical students and by experienced chest physicians.
