Cytomegalovirus Transmission Among Homosexual Men

Abstract

To the editor: Mintz and coworkers (1), in their recent report of risk factors for cytomegalovirus infection, claim that of seven sexual practices investigated, only anal-receptive intercourse correlated with acquisition of infection. Because we have previously shown that cytomegalovirus is excreted in the seminal fluid of 15% of antibody-positive homosexual men (2), transmission through anal-receptive intercourse is conceivable. However, in their analysis of sexual practices, the authors made no attempt to control for age. Age has previously been shown by these authors (3) and ourselves (4) to be strongly related to cytomegalovirus infection in homosexual men.
