Abstract

To the editor: As both a physician and attorney, I was interested in the article by Lidz and associates (1) on informed consent. The authors clearly described the limitations of “informed” consent in the context of a university teaching hospital, pointing out that perhaps only 10% of their patients “saw themselves as having an active role in decision making.” This conclusion is unfortunately likely to be accurate, given the diffusion of responsibility inherent in a university teaching service where the patient's physician is a team of interns, residents, fellows, and attending physicians.
