Abstract

New research has found wide variability in transplant center acceptance of livers for the highest ranked, sickest patients. This month, we look at new performance metrics that researchers suggest should include acceptance behavior. Also this month, we look at Wiley’s new Transplant Peer Review Network and the Living Donor Protection Act introduced in Congress earlier this year.Researchers recommend that the wide variability in organ acceptance among liver transplant centers be reflected in performance measuresKey PointsNew research has found wide variability in transplant center acceptance of livers for the highest ranked, sickest patients.Low acceptance rates correlate with substantially increased odds of these patients dying while on the waitlist.Researchers recommend that a metric based on a center's acceptance behavior be added to SRTR data for assessing center performance.
