The following is a summary of conclusions from a panel including Joseph M. Foley, M.D., Stuart J. Youngner, M.D., Richard Christie, M.D., Lisa P. Gwyther, M.S.W., Ramon Valle, Ph.D., and Akira Homma, M.D., with Stephen G. Post, Ph.D., serving as moderator and recorder. Two principal themes emerged: first, the ideal of using social and environmental approaches to behavior problems before resorting to pharmaceutical or other more invasive solutions; second, the importance of maintaining the caregiving environment.
