N. Hirschberg and S. Itkin's (see record 1979-27229-001) article focuses on the issue of student selection as a predictor of success in graduate school and degree of attainment. Hirschberg and Itkin opt for a multiple hurdles approach in order to weed out those who are less likely to succeed. An alternative approach would be to limit class size according to faculty resources available, to provide more research opportunities and training, to increase sensitivity to female students, and to increase faculty commitment to the dissertation process.
