Acquired arteriovenous aneurysms may result in fatal cardiac insufficiency because of the unfavorable circulatory dynamics set up by the shunt. Another and less common outcome results from the establishment of a subacute bacterial infection of the fistula. This complication has been reported by Bretschneider,1 Walz,2 Gravier,3 Porter and Williams,4 Hamman and Rienhoff,5 Leaman,6 and Touroff et al.7 In the first four cases named, there was also a coexisting bacterial endocarditis of the aortic valve. Our case, which has certain unique features, closely resembles the four cases cited and becomes the fifth such to be reported.CASE REPORT
