Sabine Hilt (firstname.lastname@example.org) is a senior scientist and group leader and Soren Brothers has been a PhD student in the Department of Ecosystem Research of the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, in Berlin, Germany. SB is currently an assistant professor at the Department of Watershed Sciences and Ecology Center at Utah State University, in Logan. SH is working on benthic primary producers and their ecosystem functions and SB on benthic processes and carbon cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Erik Jeppesen is a professor in the Department of Bioscience at Aarhus University, in Silkeborg, Denmark, and at the Sino-Danish Centre for Education and Research at the University of the Chinese Academy of Science, in Beijing. His major fields of interests include lake restoration, biological interactions with nutrient dynamics and climate in lakes, paleoecology, biomanipulation, and ecosystem modeling. Annelies J. Veraart studies the interface of ecology, biogeochemistry, and microbiology, focusing on nitrogen and carbon cycles. This review was part of her postdoctoral research at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). She is currently assistant professor in the Department of Aquatic Ecology and Environmental Biology at Radboud University Nijmegen. Sarian Kosten is an assistant professor in the Department of Aquatic Ecology and Environmental Biology at Radboud University, in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Her main scientific interests are the effects of climate change on water quality and the carbon balance of inland waters.
