Abstract

Essential factors in obtaining specialist registrar (SpR) posts include appropriate clinical and operative skills, clinical knowledge and qualifications such as Fellowship or Membership of The Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS or MRCS). Since the MRCS examination was introduced in 1997,1 there has been no record of how successful MRCS diplomates have been at entering the SpR grade. Hence, a study was conducted to determine this as well as to discover how long these diplomates spend in senior house officer (SHO) posts.
