Abstract

Pharmacologic stress test had come of age; in virtually every major imaging laboratory in the country, a sizable fraction of all stress tests are done withe pharmacologic stress, rather than exercise. Pharmacologic stress imaging with adenosine, dipyridamole, or dobutamine provides high sensitivity and specificity comparable to those with exercise perfusion imaging, and sensitivity may be higher than those attained during a submaximal exercise test. Despite a high frequency of side effects with all pharmacologic stressors, each of the above has a very good safety record in several thousand patients. Beyond their value in diagnosing coronary artery disease these tests have had a mojor impact on risk stratification of stable coronary patients, as well as those who have suffered an acute myocardial infarction of those undergoing major vascular procedures
