Abstract

ABSTRACT

Verified the hypothesis that the difference between the degree to which denial is used concerning death vs nondeath related concepts is significantly greater for schizophrenics than nonschizophrenics. Two forms of resistance against visual stimuli (i.e., perceptual defense and connotative rigidity) were measured for 2 groups of 30 Ss. The stimuli were divided into 2 groups: neutral and death-evoking words. Schizophrenic Ss exhibited significantly greater degrees of perceptual defense and connotative rigidity against death-evoking words, as compared with neutral words, than nonschizophrenics.
