A Software Simulation of Human Lungs During Mechanical Ventilation As a Help Tool In Clinical Settings

This paper presents a software package that has been developed to help physicians and health care professionals in determining the settings of a mechanical ventilator. On his personal computer, a physician using this software would be able to test different parameters that mimic different lung disease states with different mode of ventilation to see which would best fit a specific case. To accomplish this aim, the two-lung model has been reconsidered, and an electric circuit model, which has a behavior similar to that of human lungs when controlled by a ventilator during inspiration and expiration, has been devised. Mathematical equations that govern the behavior of this improved circuit model to different input modes have been derived.Index under: Ventilator, mathematical behavior, simulation, circuit equivalent model.
