Responding to recent high-publicity issues involving the proper endoscope cleaning and user maintenance, the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a policy to address these issues. As with many documents, this policy was misinterpreted by some local hospitals and at least 1 major endoscope vendor. Local interpretations of the directive, plus sales pressure from some endoscope manufacturers, led to the mistaken belief that only manufacturers are allowed to repair VHA endoscopes. In fact, the policy did not define who will repair the devices. Responding to this issue, the Veterans Affairs Center for Engineering & Occupational Safety and Health researched and prepared guidance for the field answering questions regarding maintenance and repair of endoscopes. We hope our work will benefit the clinical engineering community.
