Abstract

Interest in patient safety during anesthesia continues to increase each year, throughout the world, although specific areas of the subject being examined are changing. For example, the classical studies of morbidity and mortality are being replaced by more epidemiologically oriented efforts to evaluate anesthetic outcomes. Discussion of the use of technological equipment to protect patients now includes sophisticated data management. Development of simulators for training residents and for teaching crisis management build upon earlier studies of human error.
