Abstract

Current research into the epidemiology, classification, natural course and treatment of personality disorder, with reference to forensic psychiatry is reviewed. Research conducted in the past year consolidates rather than advances our current thinking in what is still a controversial area. Despite its importance and impact on health-service provision, major problems in defining the disorder remain. This in turn impedes aetiological understanding and satisfactory treatment development.
