Abstract

Recent research into sex offending suggests advances in both assessment and treatment. Additional dimensions in the classification of paraphilic sexual interest have been identified and there has been a major methodological advance in the assessment of sexual interest through plethysmography which now seems to have a much sounder empirical basis. Evidence for the efficacy of some behavioural techniques for modifying sexual preferences has emerged together with warnings about the limitations of these techniques. A key role in treatment is identified for motivational factors and consequently for the cognitive-affective variables on which they depend.
