Abstract

Practitioners, the media, and the public are re-evaluating the treatment of obesity in view of findings that most weight reduction efforts are ultimately unsuccessful and may be associated with adverse health effects. This article reviews these findings, discusses methods of identifying those persons most in need of weight reduction, and examines important developments in treatment.
