Forensic psychiatric services have evolved rapidly over the past several decades.Deinstitutionalization and the restoration of civil liberties to the mentally ill have led to extraordinary changes to service delivery. At the same time, there has been continuing public concern about mentally ill individuals who are considered too dangerous or severely disruptive to the community. Legislators have targeted this specific group with laws or restrictions to their personal liberties. These changes have fostered the meteoric growth of forensic psychiatric services. Delivery of these services has been further managed and regulated by policy makers to placate the safety concerns of the public. Curr Opin Psychiatry 11:679-682.
