Abstract

A hardware-cloth runway alley was attached to the home cage of albino rats. 12 Ss had a short runway (11 in.), same length as home cage; 12 Ss had a medium length runway (22 in.); 12 Ss had a long runway (33 in.). It was hypothesized that behavior of Ss when confronted with the short alley would be different from behavior of Ss with longer runways. 10 behavior measures were recorded by direct observation while Ss were being run to a criterion of 5 contacts with the end of the alley on each of 2 successive days. In general, short-alley Ss showed less general activity, retreating, and retracing than Ss confronted by medium or long alley. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
