Abstract

5 rats were implanted with lateral hypothalamic electrodes which elicited feeding as well as self-stimulation. Although both hypertonic saline and glucose loads were found to decrease self-stimulation rate, hypertonic saline acted through its osmotic properties whereas hypertonic glucose exerted a metabolic influence upon hypothalamic centers.
