Abstract

Investigated response contingencies of dim light onset and offset within a simple or complex environment using 160 24–36 hr. old cockerel chicks. 4 treatment conditions with yoked controls were used to replicate published reports. Results substantiated the finding that light onset is an effective sensory reinforcer for chicks and that visual complexity contributes to this reinforcing property. The data, however, seriously question a stimulus change theory because the study did not verify light offset as an effective reinforcer. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
