In Exp. I with 16 rats, vivid stimuli (V) were located immediately before the 5th choice in a 7-unit U maze to assess the von Restorff effect in rat learning. V produced reduction in total errors relative to controls over and above reduction at the 5th choice. Exp. II with 50 rats, replicated these findings and demonstrated similar effects for V at the 2nd or 7th choice. Learning was inhibited when V was moved randomly from trial to trial. The results suggest that V reduces stimulus-generalization interferences. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
