Abstract

Recorded the feeding behavior of 24 female white carneaux pigeons under ad-lib conditions and following food deprivation. Under ad-lib conditions feeding behavior consisted of a large number of brief feeding bouts distributed throughout the daylight hours. Peak periods of feedings were characterized by increases in both bout duration and frequency. Food deprivation produced a marked increase in food intake during a 1-hr test period which was proportional to body weight loss over a wide range of deprivation conditions. The elevation of intake following deprivation was accomplished by increasing the duration rather than the frequency of individual bouts. Results are compared with previous findings in the rat. Implications for feeding mechanisms are discussed. (34 ref.) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
