Although recent studies have suggested pathways of olfactory transduction in the primary neuron, the mechanisms by which the brain differentiates and remembers different smells, such as banana and rose, are only starting to be understood. Similarly, using improved methods of evaluating patients with olfactory complaints, clinicians have categorized different types of olfactory losses and distortions. The pathophysiology and treatment of these problems, however, remain poorly understood. The papers reviewed here have added valuable information to both the basic science and the clinical understanding of human olfaction.
