Breast cancer continues to be the most commonly occurring cancer in women in the United States and also remains the second leading cause of cancer mortality. During the past year, however, national statistics have shown a small but significant decrease in the mortality rate from breast cancer. These statistical trends are encouraging, particularly because they appear to reflect incremental gains in survival as a result of improvements in screening, early diagnosis, and adjuvant systemic therapy. Furthermore, we have yet to see the full benefit of the incredible increase in our knowledge of the biologic behavior of breast cancer.
