Abstract

Purpose of review

Due to the proximity of neurological structures to the elbow joint, procedures and pathology about the elbow may result in nerve injury. An understanding and appreciation of the deficits likely to be encountered and the natural history and treatment for such injuries can facilitate optimal outcomes.

Recent findings

Several recent studies gave recommendations regarding management of elbow nerve injury and suggested treatment algorithms.

Summary

Nerve injuries about the elbow may occur due to compressive neuropathies, acute trauma or as a result of iatrogenic conditions. Most cases of acute injury represent neuropraxias that may be treated expectantly; it is important, however, to recognize exceptions and to understand when further studies or procedures are indicated.
