Abstract

The failure rate of today's executives has reached alarming levels. This paper explores some of the reasons for the crisis in leadership at the top and argues that the solution lies in a better understanding of the full spectrum of competencies required for success in a constantly changing and increasingly competitive global marketplace, as well as more powerful, integrated, and accessible tools for helping line managers select and develop leadership talent for the future. The focus is particularly on assessing and developing the increasingly essential survival skill of “executive versatility,” the ability to adapt to and perform effectively across a wide range of new challenges and changing contexts.
