Abstract

Through-and-through corneal prostheses of any design and material have a poor record with regard to long-term safety and stability. Almost all of the frequent complications stem from the gradual ulceration of the tissue surrounding the prosthesis. This ulceration is not a result of materials toxicity but seems to be a biological problem related to exposure of connective tissue to leukocytes and their proteolytic enzymes
