Abstract

The Cardona through-and-through prosthesis, fitted through the upper lid, produced quite favorable initial results. Primarily because of difficulties in reoperation, the authors have modified the technique so that the prosthesis now extends between the lids, is covered by conjunctiva, or covered by lid skin after removal of the tarsus. Eyes that have not undergone previous surgery have a better prognosis for keratoprosthesis. Advances in the field have been slow primarily because of intrinsic biological problems and the low number of cases necessitating both a multidisciplinary and a multi-institutional approach
