Abstract

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (pAVMs) are abnormal communications between pulmonary arteries and veins resulting in right-to-left shunting of blood. We report a pregnant patient who presented during her first trimester with an unexplained persistent hypoxemia resulting from diffuse pAVMs. This report highlights the role of pAVMs as a potential cause of hypoxia and dyspnea during pregnancy, potentially exacerbated by physiological changes occurring during pregnancy, that if properly recognized, may prevent significant complications.
