Abstract
Demographic data from a questionnaire survey of the members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists conducted over a five-year period from 1967 through 1971 are presented. A response rate of 59 per cent was achieved. Random samples of respondents and nonrespondents indicated that the data represent characteristics of the entire population of junior, active and retired members of the society residing in the United States and Canada. A major finding was that 2,457 (37 per cent) of the respondents work more than 40 hours weekly in the operating room. The possible significance of this in terms of their well-being and performance is discussed.
