Abstract

Vaginal bacterial flora have recently become the focus of intense research attention. Factors contributing to the renewed interest include the role of non-ulcerative sexually transmitted diseases and potentially other forms of vaginitis in heterosexual HIV transmission, vaginal flora of bacterial vaginosis directly leading to obstetric complications and upper genital tract disease, and newly described antibiotic responsive vaginal infections.
