Abstract

Despite remarkable advances in the treatment of HIV-1 infected patients, suboptimal antiviral therapy still results in the emergence of drug-resistant HIV-1 variants. This review describes the application and constraints of novel recombinant virus drug susceptibility assays, which enable therapy to be directly related to changes in the phenotypic drug susceptibility of the actual replicating viral population in the serum or plasma of the patient.
