Abstract

Revision total hip arthroplasty using cemented femoral components and first-generation cementing techniques resulted in early loosening and failure. Refinements in cementing technique have significantly improved these results. The unique characteristics of cement also have allowed the recementing of temporarily removed femoral components into existing, intact cement mantles, and the impregnation of antibiotics for the treatment of infected arthroplasties. These techniques, when combined with other advances such as long femoral stems and impaction and bulk allografting, have further expanded the role of cement in revision total hip arthroplasty. The indications for the use of cemented femoral components during revision total hip arthroplasty are discussed here.
