Abstract

Amid the almost universal lack of comprehensive mental-health systems, a few states in the USA are demonstrating that good services do exist. The Madison model of intensive case management is spreading and evaluations continue to be favourable. Changes continue in our beliefs about the capabilities of mentally ill individuals, and in our respect for their preferences for accommodation, work and services.
